What to Expect When You First Reach Out

Feeling like actually talking to one of us might be too scary? Not knowing what to expect can make anxiety worse. So, let us fill you in on how a call to Changing Tides will go and what to expect.

First Contact with Our Intake Coordinator

When we touch base, you will first talk with one of our administrative staff. Our staff is specially trained to take your call. They are calm, friendly and kind.

Discussing Payment Options

Let us know you need to talk to someone about anxiety and we’ll walk with you about whether you want to use insurance or pay on your own. We will then give you information on the potential cost of therapy so you are prepared.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Once your appointment is set up, our staff will send you paperwork to complete online. You’ll complete this before your appointment, upload any insurance cards, place a credit card on file and then you’re all set.

Your First Appointment and Beyond

Wait comfortably in the lobby—no check-in needed. Your therapist will meet you at your appointment time. After your first session, our coordinator will follow up to help with any next steps.

First appointment jitters?

You’ll come to our office and have a seat in the waiting room. Your therapist will come to the waiting room to call you back to their office. You’ll find the therapist to be warm, friendly and non-judgmental. You’ll notice a calming environment and you’ll soon relax. The hardest part is over, you’re here! Your therapist will be expecting your anxiety to be high during this first appointment and she/he will ensure she is helping you feel at ease. Think of this first appointment as an information-gathering session. Your therapist will get to know you by going over your forms, talking about what therapy is like and asking some questions to better understand your concerns and/or goals.

Affordable therapy with master’s-level interns under close supervision by licensed clinicians. A great option for those seeking support at a lower cost. Interns do not accept insurance.

Insurance Billing

Our clinical social workers accept Anthem and United Healthcare insurance.

Our licensed social workers accept Anthem and Aetna.

Utilizing insurance can significantly reduce the cost of therapy. Please reach out to us and provide your insurance information for specific details on your insurance coverage and the cost of therapy.

Out of Network Insurance Billing

Changing Tides will happily provide you a bill for your services with us that you can provide to your insurance company for possible reimbursement called a “Superbill.” Each insurance company provides unique coverage or benefits and due to this we are unable to advise whether your insurance company will provide reimbursement. It is recommended that you contact your insurance company and ask if you have any “out of network” outpatient mental health coverage. We find that clients are frequently reimbursed for some portion of their services dependent upon their insurer.

*Associate Therapist Licensing Information

Our LSW therapists each hold a Master’s Degree in Social Work and are licensed social workers in Indiana. They are currently working towards obtaining their clinical social work license by practicing under a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who provides supervision for their work with clients. Due to this, they provide services at a reduced rate and only accept Anthem and Aetna insurance.

We also have Intern therapists, who are master’s students in counseling or social work programs completing their clinical training. They are closely supervised by licensed clinicians to ensure high-quality care and support throughout your therapy.

All clinicians are supervised by Krista Caughey, MSW, LCSW.

The Changing Tides

At Changing Tides Counseling, our mission is to make therapy feel human — warm, genuine, and approachable. We believe healing happens best in a space that feels comfortable, not clinical; connected, not intimidating. Our team provides compassionate, client-focused support that meets people where they are and helps them move toward where they want to be.

By creating a supportive environment for both clients and staff, we nurture growth, connection, and understanding that ripple far beyond our office walls — into homes, relationships, and the wider community.

Frequently Asked.

Where are you located?

We provide therapy services at our location at 8130 S. Meridian Street Suite 4A, Indianapolis, IN 46217. We are located behind the Chase Bank near Perry Meridian High School and Meridian Middle School. We also provide Telehealth therapy services on a virtual secure platform anywhere in Indiana.

How much does therapy cost?

Our therapy rates are $135.00 per 55 minute session with one of our licensed clinical social workers and $110.00 per hour with one of our licensed social workers. Our couples counseling cost is $135.00 per session. This includes either an in-person session at our Southside office or a secure virtual appointment from the comfort of your home. However, insurance greatly reduces the cost of therapy. Call us or message us today and we’ll be happy to check your insurance coverage for therapy services.

Do you accept insurance?

Currently, we have several providers who accept Anthem and United Healthcare insurance. We also have self-pay therapy providers. Most Anthem and United Healthcare plans offer some mental health services coverage. If you are not sure what your plan offers, we can help you find out. We can also provide you a special bill (referred to as a Superbill) to submit to other insurance companies and you may be reimbursed for some of the costs you paid for your therapy. Contact us and let us know you need information on the cost of therapy. We’ll be happy to help you determine what your insurance will cover.

How long will I be in therapy?

The length of therapy depends on your goals and your progress. After we complete our first appointment with your therapist at Changing Tides Counseling, we will be able to provide an outline of our work together. However, healing is not linear and everyone’s journey is different, which means setting a time frame for healing is very difficult.

How often do I need to attend therapy?

Some clients come to therapy services weekly while others come bi-weekly or even monthly. The frequency of your sessions is ultimately up to you. After your first session, your therapist will discuss with you their recommendation for frequency, but you make the final decision of what works best for you. Together you and your therapist can develop a plan to help you get the help you’re seeking.
